What are the common problems with used excavators?

Used excavators, while cost-effective, often come with issues stemming from wear, improper maintenance, or hidden damage. Below are the most common problems by 6 points.

  1. Engine-related issues: Worn cylinders, leaking gaskets, or clogged fuel injectors are frequent. These can cause reduced power, excessive smoke (black/blue), or difficulty starting—signs of long-term overuse or poor oil change habits.
  2. Hydraulic system failures: Leaking hoses, worn seals, or contaminated hydraulic fluid are common. They lead to slow arm/bucket movement, uneven lifting, or unusual noises, as the hydraulic system relies on tight seals and clean fluid for pressure.
  3. Undercarriage wear: Tracks (for crawler models) or tires (for wheeled ones) often show cracks, missing components, or uneven wear. This affects stability and increases fuel consumption; replacing undercarriages is also costly.
  4. Electrical malfunctions: Faulty wiring, dead batteries, or broken sensors (e.g., for fuel level or temperature) are typical. These can cause dashboard errors, non-functional lights, or even sudden shutdowns.
  5. Structural damage: Hidden cracks in the boom, arm, or frame may exist (often from heavy loads or collisions). Small cracks can worsen over time, risking safety and reducing the excavator’s lifespan.
  6. Transmission problems: Slipping gears, delayed shifting, or strange noises during gear changes indicate transmission wear—usually from insufficient maintenance or overloading.
